Dear Parents /Carers,
Each year Saltwell Park hosts a Gateshead wide school fun run. Hundreds of children descend upon the park from all parts of the Borough to complete the fun run. Our school has not participated previously but this year we will be taking Reception – Year 6 pupils.
The intu Metrocentre Great Gateshead Fun Run is meticulously organised by Gateshead School Sport Partnership staff and PE coordinators from participating schools.
I am happy to confirm White Mere will be taking part in the run this coming Friday morning, 26th May.
School gates will be open for children from 8:30am, however, children must arrive at school no later than 8:45am. A prompt arrival to school is required so the coaches transporting us can leave by 9:00am. This is required as the school will need to register with the organisers no later than 9:20am. From there the year 6 children will begin their race at 9:45am with each class following in reverse order from there on in.
The event should be completed by 12:00-12:30pm with children arriving back to school in time for their lunch. This will not affect any child that regularly has a school meal. In an attempt to answer your questions I have included guidance from the organisers regarding key issues below.
Schools are asked to inform all parents/potential spectators that NO CAR PARKING facilities will be available and that they are strongly advised NOT to travel to the park by car.
Pupils should come dressed in appropriate clothing to take part in the activity (e.g. shorts/tracksuit bottoms, t‐shirt/jacket and suitable training shoes – spikes are not appropriate for this surface). Participants should come ready to run – NO CHANGING FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE.
I am aware that this conflicts with our non-uniform day as organised by the PTA. However it is essential that the children arrive in clothes that are suitable for the run and it would be advisable that they wear a White Mere P.E. top so as to be identified by their teacher. If you wish to send your child to school with a change of clothes to wear on their return from the event, this is fine; however they must be left at the school before we leave.
Please note the weather forecast and ensure appropriate steps are taken to account for this (e.g. warm/water proof clothing and sun cream etc.). Due to the scale of the event, no undercover areas can be provided.
Please ensure that pupils bring plenty of drinking water and remain hydrated throughout the event. A small amount of water will be made available by the event organisers for emergency situations only and is not available for general consumption.
Finally, please note that due to the nature and scale of this event, there may be lengthy periods of time where pupils are ‘stood waiting’. For this reason, please ensure that all pupils have adequate clothing in order to keep warm/dry during this time.
I hope this covers everything but if you have any additional queries please don’t hesitate to ask myself or your child’s class teacher.
