Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year to you all – I hope you enjoyed a lovely Christmas break and that the return to work and school has gone smoothly! The children have made a great start to the new term and the teachers have been saying how impressed they are at their attitude. Long may it continue! As always at the start of a new term, there are some important dates and information to share with you.

KS2 Yard Project Thank you so much to all of you for your incredible support in our aim to raise the money needed to pay for our KS2 Yard play equipment and PE markings. I was very aware that there were a lot of events around Christmas, including trips, which involved us asking for donations from parents and carers – thank you for your support. You’ve helped us raise an amazing amount of money – the Christmas Fayre alone raised £1373.16, on top of the £282 from the KS2 Film Night, and Barclays Bank have agreed to match the amount raised from our Christmas Raffle and Tombola! All of this means that we have now raised £5005.16 ourselves, which will be match-funded up to £10,010.32! We’re almost at the target amount already and I am hoping to have the order placed in the next week or two. This is great news for school and is down to your fantastic support, so thank you again!

Reception Maths Workshops & Reflection Sessions Miss Wilson will be hosting a Maths Workshop for our Reception parents this term on Thursday 31st January. This session will take place in the school hall from 9.15am and will involve parents working with their children once the adults have completed the first part of the session with Miss Wilson. The whole session will last for between an hour to an hour and a quarter. Interested parents and carers can simply let Miss Wilson know in advance.

There will also be opportunities for parents and carers to reflect upon their child’s learning by looking through their learning journal together in a series of Reflection Sessions. These sessions will take place in Reception Class on Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th February from 2.45-3.15pm and parents or carers who would like to attend should sign up on the Reception noticeboard outside the Reception entrance.

Safeguarding Update On Monday 7th January the staff had Safeguarding training from a local advisory service – Clennell Educational Solutions – when we also reviewed and enhanced our safeguarding procedures in school. As always, should you ever have any concerns about safeguarding or child protection, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either myself (, Mrs Hutchinson ( or Miss Orrock ( in our capacity as the school’s Designated Safeguarding Leaders.

Parents’ Evenings This term’s parents’ evenings will take place on Thursday 28th February and Tuesday 5th March. As usual, further details will be sent out nearer the time.

Family Learning Club I just wanted to remind parents and carers that we have been fortunate enough to access another session of Family Learning – feedback was very positive about the previous sessions. This time children will get to make a scrapbook about the World. It sounds very interesting and places are limited so if you are interested please speak to the office.

The Spring Sing! – Year 4 & Year 6 You may have noticed on the school’s website that we have been successful in our application to take part in Gateshead’s Spring Sing event at The Sage on Wednesday 13th March. I am very pleased to say that we have been able to enter two classes into the event this year – Year 4 and Year 6. Mrs Devenport will be leading the event and more details will be sent out as soon as we have them!

Gateshead Dance Festival – Year 2 & Year 3 I am very pleased to inform you that Years 2 and 3 will be taking part in the annual Gateshead Dance Festival. The children had their first session with the coach this week and will be learning their dances over the coming term. We have applied for tickets and should soon know our allocation but I can tell parents that the event will be on Wednesday 3rd April between 2.00-4.00pm at The Sage. We will be in touch as soon as we have more information.

Dogs Just a reminder about bringing dogs onto the school site – please do not bring dogs onto the school premises (and that includes carrying puppies or small dogs onto the site) as a number of our pupils are very wary of them. I am aware that this may cause some inconvenience at times but I appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Earrings Pupils are allowed to wear small studs but hooped earrings – or earrings that hang down – are not allowed to be worn in school. If your child has PE and you would like them to wear a sticking plaster over their ear stud, please provide them with a plaster on the day of their lesson.

Some of you may have noticed a series of raised beds that have appeared on the school field. These are part of our plan to improve our use of the school’s extensive outdoors and we will be planting the beds up with a range of vegetables when the weather improves.

As usual, if there is anything at all that you want to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Chris Boddy
Head Teacher
