Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been such a busy half term so far and life in school is moving along at a very rapid pace!  Last week, the Year 4 and Year 6 children were at the Spring Sing, the week before that we had our Book Week and prior to that we’ve had Parents’ Evenings.  It’s been great to have so much involvement and support from you in each of those events.  This week, our Year 3 children have been off to The Baltic for a special art afternoon, while Year 5 and 6 are going to the Centre for Life next week to follow up their work in Science.  I’m sure you’ll agree that these experiences are all so important for the children’s education.

Headteacher Recruitment

The advert for our headteacher vacancy went online on Friday 15th March.  We have already had numerous enquiries and hope for a strong field of applicants when the application period closes in early April.

Healthy Packed Lunches and Water Bottles

We are having a drive on healthy eating in school and one area in which we’d like your support is with packed lunches.  We have noticed some packed lunches containing several sugary snacks and biscuits which is too much.  Children are welcome to have one biscuit or one small treat in their lunch box as long as it is part of a balanced lunch.  Also, some children have started bringing juice in their water bottles – we do ask that children have only water in their bottles.  If there is an identified medical reason why this is a problem, please contact your child’s class teacher.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

Mothers’ Day Coffee Afternoon

The PTA will be holding a Mothers’ Day Coffee Afternoon on Friday 29th March at 2.15pm in the school hall. We will be inviting the Year 4 and Year 6 children to sing a selection of the songs from The Spring Sing at the Coffee Afternoon and it should be a lovely event.

Parent Governors

As most of you will know, we are fortunate to have a very supportive governing body here at White Mere.  Two of our Parent Governor positions are up for renewal and, while the current governors may well wish to fulfil this important role again, if there any parents who are interested in putting themselves forward for this 4 year term, please register your interest by email with myself on by Friday 29th March.

Nursery Family Workshops

Mrs Lowrie has been holding Nursery Family Workshops this term – thank you to those of you who have made these fun sessions so far.  There is another morning session – Ready Steady Cook – next Wednesday (10.30-11.45am) after which Mrs Lowrie will be holding a summary session on Thursday 4th April between 5.00-5.45pm.  This summary session is really aimed at parents and carers who would like to know the key messages of the morning sessions but haven’t been able to attend them.  Thank you to Mrs Lowrie for organising this programme.

Book Week

We had a lovely week in school around World Book Day on 7th March.  Each class enjoyed a trip, either to Leam Lane Library or Waterstones in Newcastle – it was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm for reading and books across the school!  An important part of the week was the high level of involvement of parents and carers, so many of whom came along to our Reading Breakfast, Forest School session and Coffee Afternoon.  Thank you for your support and also to Mrs Hutchinson for organising the many events during the week.

PTA Fundraising & the KS2 Yard

Many of you will have seen the lovely photos on Twitter of our Sponsored Bounce last Friday!  The children (and some staff!) had a great time and we are very hopeful that the sponsor money that the children will have raised will cover the remaining cost of the newly installed KS2 Yard.  Thank you to our PTA and also to all parents and carers for the support you have shown with this project – I’m sure we will hit our final amount and I am also delighted to let you know that the installation was completed this week!  Thank you once again.

Year 5 and Year 6 Residential Trips

I just wanted to thank parents for the payments received for the two residential trips.  Year 5 have now chosen their final set of activities and selected their food choices for their two days at Gibside – it all sounds very exciting!  We have been asked to pass on that the children will need a sleeping bag this year for the Gibside trip.  Year 6 will be choosing their Ford Castle activities very soon too.

The Spring Sing!

Our Year 4 and Year 6 pupils took part in the Spring Sing at The Sage on Wednesday 13th  March and it was a lovely event.  The atmosphere and the singing from the 12 schools was beautiful and our children did school proud with their excellent voices and impressive attitude.  Well done to Years 4 and 6, with thanks to Mrs Devenport who led our involvement in the festival.

Gateshead Dance Festival – Years 2 and 3

Years 2 and 3 will be taking part in the annual Gateshead Dance Festival on Wednesday 3rd April between 2.00-4.00pm.  Parents and carers have already bought tickets and we are really looking forward to the festival which is always a fantastic event!

Easter News

This year we have agreed with the PTA that school will organise the children’s Easter Egg Competition.  The children will be asked to bring in their boiled egg (maybe two in case of a breakage!) and any particular craft materials that they think they’ll need on the morning of Friday 5th April, when they’ll make their entry into the egg competition.  We’ll then judge the competition in the afternoon.  I’ll send out more information next week.

As usual, if there is anything at all that you want to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Chris Boddy
